Dear Library Community,

Please find linked here the 2008-2009 Annual Report for the Campbell County Public Library System (in PDF format).  You will be pleased to see the fruit of prudent use of the funds provided by local revenue, state aid, and federal grants.  While the current fiscal climate is trying for all, the Campbell County Public Library System views it as our time to shine.  Community library use has skyrocketed and, with it, our relevance and value to your community, as we address emerging needs and perform traditional library functions:

  • Information & Digital Access:  By providing broadband internet access (unavailable to many for geographic as well as economic reasons), libraries bridge the gap between the “haves” and “have nots,”  as well as interpreting the countless information choices presented digitally.
  • Computer Literacy:  As more government services and employment processes make the digital move, libraries provide the technology and assistance to keep our seniors, workforce, and students vital and in touch.
  • Job-seeker Assistance: The library helps the unemployed search, complete online forms, etc. and works collaboratively with the Virginia Employment Commission to provide one-on-one assistance for those who need it.
  • Children’s programming:  Attendance at our children’s programming has skyrocketed as families are unable to purchase traditional preschool and/or are looking for more “free” things to do.
  • Library Resources:  Patrons tighten their own belts by using library resources (magazines, newspapers, etc) instead of purchasing them.
  • Distance Learning: Burgeoning on-line/distance education opportunities have created new demands for proctoring, reference services, electronic data access, and computer usage.

By measuring community needs, researching and implementing library best practices, we hope to expand our services, despite shrinking budgets and provide nimble response to community need.  Additional evening hours, additional electronic resources, and grant-based programming are among our first priorities.  We are confident that you will find the Campbell County libraries highly valued by your community and thank you for your role in serving them—without your support, we could not perform these many functions.  If we can ever be of service to you, please don’t hesitate to call on me.

Sincerely,
Nan Brunson Carmack
