Who We Are
The Campbell County Public Library system is made up of one main library located in Rustburg and three branch libraries that serve communities throughout Campbell County. Campbell County Public Libraries provide free services to everyone, even those who do not live within Campbell County.
The library system holds over 231,017 items including over 8466 audiobooks and 9462 videos.
In total, over 286,852 items were checked out of the system during fiscal year 2010-2011. In addition to these items, 231,091 thousands of people entered Campbell County Public Libraries to utilize print and electronic reference resources, access the Internet through the Library’s fiber-optic connection, enjoy Wi-fi service, participate in programs, or attend one of the Library’s many events.

The Campbell County Public Library is dedicated to providing the library resources, services, and information technology necessary to anticipate and meet the evolving educational, informational, and cultural needs of the public it serves.
CCPLS Chronology
Rustburg
In 1939, the Rustburg Library unofficially begins in a single room in the old clerk’s office. It is known as the Campbell County Reading Room.
1966 – The Campbell County Public Library in Rustburg opens as a demonstration library operated by the Library of Virginia.
June, 1968 – The library becomes a free public library operated by Campbell County.
January, 1986 – After operating in 2,900 square feet of space of 20 years, the Rustburg Library moves into its present 12,500 sq ft facility on Village Highway in downtown Rustburg.
Patrick Henry Memorial Library
June, 1939 -- the Brookneal library is organized by a group of local women who name it Patrick Henry Memorial Library. It is officially recognized by the town in 1942.
August 10, 1982 – PHML joins the Campbell County Public Library system
February, 1992 – PHML holds an open house at its current location, a facility purchased and renovated with funds raised by the community.
Timbrook Library
February 6, 1965 – Named after the Timbrook Woman’s Club, Timbrook Library opens in a small house next to Whitten’s Funeral Home on Timberlake Road. The Timbrook Library remains in this location until the Lynchburg City annexation in 1977 closes the doors.
1981 – Campbell County Library gives its old bookmobile to the Timberlake area.
1982 -- Timbrook joins the Campbell County Library system and uses the bookmobile in the Waterlick Shopping Center until 1984.
January, 1985 – The library moves from the bookmobile into two converted classrooms and a teacher’s lounge at Brookville Middle School. Timbrook becomes automated at this location.
In 1992, the School Board takes back the school space and Timbrook Library moves to our present location in the Southwood Village Shopping Center. The county is currently seeking an option to purchase or construct a county-owned facility to better serve the community.
Staunton River Memorial Library
1918 -- Altavista’s first library starts out as a book exchange by a local Boy Scout troop.
1920 – The official public library opens and changes locations several times over the years.
1985 – The Altavista Library joins the Campbell County Public Library system and is now called Staunton River Memorial Library. The new building and present location is formally opened October 12, 1986.
2006- An addition to the Staunton River Memorial Library was constructed to create a children’s area and a programming room. This renovation was funded by the community.
