Main branch- Rustburg

Thank you for your interest in the Friends of the Campbell County Library, Ruth Guthrie Chapter in Rustburg! We are dedicated to helping the Rustburg library with collections, programs, special needs and special projects.

We are administered by a board of seven elected individuals and one staff representative. Our general membership is comprised of individuals like you who support and celebrate our mission by paying a small annual membership fee.

Our primary task is to support the library financially in whatever way is needed. In addition, we strive to contribute to a sense of community through offering various programs and special events.

Current free, open-to-the-public programs and projects include:

Senior Bingo – every first Thursday of the month at 10:00 a.m.

All seniors are invited to play this weekly game, run by its participants. This program has been a popular tradition for years. The Friends provide the space and game supplies. The players supply snacks and prizes.

Needlework Night – every Tuesday at 6:30 p.m.

Bring whatever you’re working on and join this lively group for creation, ideas and camaraderie. This group began meeting monthly and became popular so quickly that they now meet weekly. In addition to working on individual projects, the group as a whole has contributed to several charities, including a quilt for an Indian tribe and caps for newborns. The Friends provide the space and snacks.

Coupon Exchange– accessible during library hours

There is a box in the periodical area where you can donate coupons you won’t use and help yourself to coupons you will use. This project was initiated and is maintained by volunteers.

Book Sale– accessible during library hours

Anyone who comes to the library is encouraged to donate or purchase gently used books. The Friends maintains an ongoing sale of these books in the foyer. Most books are priced at one dollar. From this sale, the Friends earns over $3,000 a year to give back to the library!

We are extremely grateful to library staff member Jeannie for her masterful coordination of this sale.

Display area

The Friends purchased and installed exhibit rails behind the main computers. We have hosted formal and informal exhibits there that provide global or local information or simply please the eye.

Special Events

Recent endeavors include hosting a summer youth writing program, running an advocacy campaign to let our elected officials know how much our patrons appreciate library funding, recognizing staff for work with our book sale and catering a staff appreciation lunch.

Contributions

Recent contributions include $1,500 for library collections and programming, funding of staff attendance at professional conferences, and the purchase of new lighting for the adult reading area and a large display monitor for the circulation area.

The Friends' funding for all of the above comes entirely from annual membership fees and book sales. Our operating costs are minimal, and all our board members are volunteers. Therefore, the amount of money we make determines the amount we can give to the library.  Click here to view the 2012 Membership Renewal Letter.

How can you help?

Membership in the Friends is $5 per year for individuals or $10 per year for families and includes a coupon for a free book from our used book sale in the foyer. You can join or renew at the front desk.  Your membership fee supports the library in countless ways. Memberships are not tax deductible. You may also make a donation with or without being a member. All support is greatly appreciated. Click the "donate" button below to contribute through PayPal.

Membership requires nothing more than payment of the annual fee. Some members choose to attend programs or volunteer in some fashion. Volunteer opportunities include serving on the board, helping with programs, fundraising, advocacy or suggesting new ideas.

The Friends Executive Board currently has five members:

Sue Eick is our President. She has been a fan of the library since she and her children began attending storytime many years ago.  Now, she and her family enjoy checking out books, movies, using the computers, and attending programs.  They also greatly enjoy the welcoming staff and feel like part of a close- knit community.

Renee Gates is our Vice President.  She is a transplant from upstate New York, five years ago.  She enjoys the Tuesday night Needlework and all of the events sponsored by the Friends of the Library.  She spends time with her horses, traveling with her husband, and visiting family and friends.

Tiffany Baldridge is our Secretary.  She joined the Friends as the Rustburg area representative last year and began serving as secretary in 2010.  After moving to the Rustburg area in 2008, she was excited to find herself in such close proximity to the main branch of our Library.  She has three children at Rustburg Middle and Rustburg Elementary.  She also volunteers to be the Girls on the Run coach at RES.  Her family has very much enjoyed participating in the Library's activities, such as story-times, reading with Bailey the dog, and summer reading challenges.

HJ Peterson is our Treasurer.  She enjoys being part of the library community knitting with the Needlework Group as well as reading with the Book Discussion Group.  When she is not at the library she likes to cook, garden and spend time with her husband traveling and hiking with their two dogs.

Shirley Rosser is our Seneca area District Representative.  She has served on the friends board for three years. Growing up she developed a love of reading, inspired by several elementary school teachers who read "Little House" and "Grimm's Fairy Tales" to their classes and her mother whom loved to read. Books took her to places and times she had no means of visiting. One of her favorite authors was Louisa May Alcott. Books helped her understand others and develop a sense of self. She wants to encourage others to discover the power of reading and share her love of reading.

Nan Carmack is our staff liaison. She is the director of the Campbell County Public Library System, overseeing the four branch libraries.  Nan was born and raised in Campbell County, graduating from Brookville High School.  A lifelong love of literature, as well as a passion for social justice, makes librarianship the perfect fit for her.  She lives in Evington with her husband and three teen-aged children, as well as horses, dogs, cats, and chickens.  She knits, gardens, and plays with her critters when she is not at the library.
